Wooden clock - exotic Mopani hardwood from Zimbabwe. Free standing - just over 5" high and 7" wide.
Male elephants push down Mopani trees, or break off branches to browse the canopy – it is estimated that a large bull damages over 1500 trees a year in its search for food. Females, on the other hand, are lot more gentle, and typically try to feed off the Mopani tree without killing it. In so doing, they stunt the growth of these tough trees, thus creating vast areas of scrub Mopani woodland that have the appearance of stands of fruit trees or vineyards. African folklore, says that female elephants do this to ensure that the leaves of the Mopani trees are always available to their offspring. This makes sense, as Mopani leaves have the highest protein content of any tree in the African savanna.
